If you customize MetaHumans beyond what MetaHuman Creator offers, two tools come up again and again: Poly Hammer Character DNA and Mesh Morpher. Both can read and edit MetaHuman DNA files. They live in completely different places - and that difference, more than any feature list, decides which one fits your pipeline.

The short version

  • Character DNA is a Blender add-on. If your character artists live in Blender and you want to edit MetaHuman heads there and send them back to Unreal, it is a natural fit - and the base edition became free in July 2026.
  • Mesh Morpher lives in Unreal Engine (and in a standalone Windows app). If you want DNA editing, wrapping, sculpting and morph work to happen where the character ships - with no export and re-import loop - that is what it is built for.

What Character DNA does

Poly Hammer built Character DNA to bring MetaHumans into Blender: import a MetaHuman .dna file and its animation, customize the character with Blender tooling, and export the result back. It bundles Epic Games OpenRigLogic (released under an MIT license) for a seamless installation, supports .dna files created with Unreal Engine 5.6 and newer, and runs on Blender 4.5+ on Windows, Linux and macOS. The free base edition covers import, animation, baking and export; advanced features such as the RBF Editor are part of the paid Pro edition (individual perpetual licenses at 79 USD, team licenses from 259 USD), and the Character Control Rig add-on is a separate product.

What Mesh Morpher does

Mesh Morpher approaches the same problem from inside the engine. Classic edits and bakes DNA bone expressions, fixes broken expressions on customized faces and generates bone-driven expressions from sculpted morphs. Graph goes further: custom DNA topology (add, remove, subdivide, decimate geometry inside the DNA), DNA assets for any skeletal mesh, plus the surrounding pipeline - 3D wrapping, GPU sculpting, texture transfer and Python automation. Studio packages the same toolkit as a standalone Windows app with no engine required. Exported .dna files round-trip with Maya, Houdini and - yes - Blender.

How to choose

Choose Character DNA when Blender is your home: your artists sculpt there, your pipeline already round-trips, and the free base edition covers your DNA needs.

Choose Mesh Morpher when the iteration loop should stay in Unreal Engine: you are fixing expressions on shipped characters, generating morphs and correctives against real engine assets, or you need capabilities DNA import/export alone does not cover - wrapping, runtime morphing, custom DNA topology.

Use both if that is your reality - they are not mutually exclusive. Mesh Morpher even syncs meshes with Blender live, so a hybrid pipeline is genuinely practical.
